Night Paddling Photographs
I’m lucky enough to teach an A Level student, Sam, who is a keen photographer. He’s been giving me some advice on various manual settings on my DSLR, in particular night scene photography for which I am extremely grateful.
Thought I would share my first efforts. Pretty pleased yet so, so much to learn! Click either photos to see a larger version.

Hi Solent cracking photos, perfectly exposed, do you use a big tripod or just a small lightweight one?
No tripod for these – just the top of a wooden post for the top one, and sitting on the pebbles for the bottom one! When they are viewed full size there is some blurring on the top one, and I’m blurred on the bottom one although the rest of the photo is in focus. I couldn’t stand still for 30secs!!
Had fun taking them over 2 night paddles and was glad of the darkness as i was using a 12 sec timer to run around and get into the photo – looked a bit daft running around for the 40 odd shots it took to get these 2!
Haven’t got the hang of selecting the right exposure/aperture and ISO yet – lots of experimenting going on. It was almost pitch black where I was stood so i was amazed how much light the camera can pick up with a long exposure.
Magnificent photos!! Love em!
