The weather has jut turned colder here on the South Coast. We very rarely see snow however the recent frosts make for picturesque drives across the New Forest to work but play havoc with drying out the paddling kit! Brings back fond memories of working in an Outdoor Centre which had amazing drying rooms – [...]
Thank Goodness For Kayak Straps
Almost offered my spare set to this paddler (Click Image To Enlarge) ….
Lights for Night Paddling
I have received an email from a paddler enquiring about lights for night paddling. Whilst in New Zealand he used a similar set-up to this and wonders if anyone in the UK has come across anything similar. The majority of paddlers I know who paddle at night use a combination of headtorches and lightsticks however, [...]
Making a Greenland Paddle
I’ve just come across a fantastic set of posts by Adam Bolonsky (based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA) detailing a method of creating a Greenland paddle using a Jig and a Router. I’ve often thought about giving a Greenland paddle a go and the thought of paddling with a Greenland paddle you have lovingly created really [...]
Solent Sea Kayaking Website: Facelift
The Solent Sea Kayaking website is getting a facelift. Apologies if things are a little funky for a while. Feel free to drop by and take a look. If you have any comments or suggestions please drop us a line.
Belated Congratulations
Over the summer period a couple of ‘big trips’ were successfully completed, both along the Scottish coastline. Dorset paddler Mark Rainsley completed his attempt to paddle the entire West & North coast whilst Simon and Liz Willis completed their fact finding mission prior to writing the Scottish Sea Kayak Trail Guidebook.
Last Minute Request for A Kayaker!
I have had an enquiry from Tim Moss as follows: Hello Solent Sea Kayakers… Strange and last minute request for you: I am swimming across the Solent tomorrow (Saturday 13th) and need a canoe to support me. I will be at Stokes Bay by Gilkicker Point at 1300 hours and heading for Ryde Beach. There [...]
New Addition To Solent Sea Kayaking Team
A new addition to the Solent Sea Kayaking Team. Evan Jack Smith arrived at 3:02pm on the 6th September with hands in a classic ‘hand rolling’ position which did not impress his mother or the midwives. Mother and baby doing very well. Father an emotional wreck! Now time to find a double sea kayak
Your Paddle Survey
I am interested the types of paddles that sea kayakers are currently using. To undertake some simple research I have added a poll to the Solent Sea kayaking website (on the right hand side of the home page) which allows you to choose the features your primary paddle has, for example 2 piece split, asymetric [...]
Nice Way To End The Day
I am lucky enough to live a matter of minutes from Hythe Marina, on the edge of Southampton Water. Whilst it’s not the most picturesque stretch of water it provides an interesting paddle. I often leave about 8pm, after my 3 year daughter is tucked up in bed, and can be on the water by [...]
